At this Saturday’s Cotswold Big Swim at Cleveland Lakes, the 'plant a tree' concept has grown into something special. The DB Maxers that have chosen to forgo their finisher’s medal in favour of planting trees instead, will be contributing to a local initiative with multiple benefits.
Thanks to their decision, DB Max is able to purchase two mature ash trees to be planted at Wassell Acres in Bradford on Avon. But it's not solely a tree-planting exercise this time, as the trees will serve a vital purpose in providing natural, year-round shelter for a resident group of horses.
Why Ash Trees?
1. Native, Hardy & Beneficial
Local Ecology: Native to the UK (Fraxinus excelsior), ash trees form a vital cornerstone of our natural landscape, supporting over 1,000 species of wildlife, birds, and insects.
Ideal Livestock Shelter: Ash trees develop a broad, light-canopied crown that provides essential dappled shade in summer while offering a strong windbreak during colder months—making them perfect for horse paddocks.
2. Outstanding Carbon Reduction & Environmental Impact
High-Capacity Carbon Sinks: Fast-growing native hardwoods like ash store carbon rapidly during their growing phase. A single mature ash tree can absorb approximately 20–22 kg of CO_2 per year and store up to 1 tonne of carbon over its total lifespan.
Air & Soil Benefits: Beyond carbon sequestration, mature trees filter airborne pollutants, reduce localized soil erosion, and improve rainwater absorption to prevent waterlogging.
By swapping physical medals for living roots, our athletes are leaving a footprint that goes well beyond the finish line!
On behalf of Revel and the other horses, a huge thank you to everyone who opted in - your swim and choice to plant a tree, is directly contributing to local biodiversity and creating a shelter that will stand at Wassell Acres for generations to come!
